Mars2010_ Pt2of6_ Various Panelists_ The Vasimr Drive For Space Exploration_ Panel Discussion. The Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket (VASIMR) is an electro-magnetic thruster for spacecraft propulsion. It uses radio waves to ionize and heat a propellant and magnetic fields to accelerate the resulting plasma to generate thrust. It is one of several types of spacecraft […]
Q&A: Can you you control a nuclear fission reaction to power a spacecraft?
by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center Question by : Can you you control a nuclear fission reaction to power a spacecraft? Is it possible to contain a nuclear fission reaction (or better yet, fusion reaction) and direct the thrust from the reaction out the back of a spaceship in order to power it at 0.5 […]
Spacecraft NASA Is Orbiting Massive Asteroid.mp4
ABC News – PASADENA, Calif. July 19, 2011 (AP) NASA’s Dawn spacecraft was captured into orbit around the massive asteroid Vesta after a 1.7 billion-mile journey and is preparing to begin a study of a surface that may date to the earliest era of the solar system, the space agency said Monday. The entry into […]
What happens to the byproduct of hydrogen fuel cells in a space craft?
Question by Joshua Cloud: What happens to the byproduct of hydrogen fuel cells in a space craft? I have a project on hydrogen fuel cells and read that they use them in american space crafts. But i was wondering where does the water go and what happens to it? Best answer: Answer by Billits exhuast, […]
How high would a space station have to orbit Jupiter for it’s occupants to experience Earth-like gravity?
Question by Usarian: How high would a space station have to orbit Jupiter for it’s occupants to experience Earth-like gravity? Do we have a propulsion system available today (or soon to come like VASIMR, etc) that could maintain that kind of orbit? Best answer: Answer by lunchtime_browserif they were orbiting anything, they would experience orbiting-like […]
NASA Now Minute: Nanotechnology and Space
In this NASA now program, Dr. Mike Oye describes the scale of nanotechnology, how properties of matter change and how nanowires could be used in future space exploration. NASA Now Minutes are excerpts from a weekly current events program available for classroom use at the NASA Explorer Schools Virtual Campus. Video Rating: 5 / 5
breakthrough ion space thruster: thrust measurement “iongaspropulsion@gmail.com”
Thrust measurement of the most advance ion space thruster. This technology is a breakthrough in space propulsion thrusters. The thrust is shown in milligrams. The average thrust level is between 2 and 4mN at 15W supply power with 6kV accelerating voltage, 2.5mA ion current, 85% of ionization of Krypton propellant, ISP is about 10000s. There […]
Ion thruster spacecraft speed limit?
Question by A: Ion thruster spacecraft speed limit? if Nasa in the future make a very big Nuclear fusion generator to make lots of electricity, then a Ion thruster space craft can rich 99% of light speed ? or space crafts powered by Ion thruster which only work with electricity never can rich the highest […]
Building a space ship, what kind of propulsion will get me to the speed of light?
by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center Question by Desert Caretaker: Building a space ship, what kind of propulsion will get me to the speed of light? The plan is to slingshot around Jupiter back towards the sun then deploy a sail to capture both solar winds and, photons. -or- just use more rubber bands? Best […]
If light ( photons ) does not have mass how would light be use to push a solar sail in space?
by PhOtOnQuAnTiQuE Question by Richard P: If light ( photons ) does not have mass how would light be use to push a solar sail in space? Best answer: Answer by cheez-itAlthough photons do not have mass, they still carry momentum. Add your own answer in the comments!
Solar Power from Space
Solar Power Satellites (SPS) are fairly large structures in space that convert solar energy, captured as solar irradiation, into an energy form that can be transmitted wirelessly (Wireless Power Transmission – WPT) to any remote location with a receiver station, either on Earth, to high altitude platforms, to other spacecraft or even to surfaces of […]

Could space heaters REALLY affect the electricity bill THIS MUCH?
The most I had ever paid for an electric bill prior to this was 70 for a 3-month period (2-person apartment connected to central heating). Last month I moved to a 1-person place that is NOT connected to central heating (instead uses 3 electric space heaters). I don’t have many appliances and I try to […]

How is nuclear energy released?, Experimental evidence for space matter
Here we discus two experiments: 1) Creating a deuterium nucleus by fusing one proton and one neutron together. Result: a) Volume and mass of the both particles are decreased from their individual states, b) Densities of the both particles are remaining unchanged, c) Reaction is exothermic. In the bond making, the particles overlap each other. […]
NASA – Dawn Spacecraft Enroute to Asteroid Belt
NASA’s Dawn spacecraft is on its way to study a pair of asteroids after lifting off Thursday, September 27, 2007 from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 7:34 am EDT (4:34 am PDT). Mission controllers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., received telemetry on schedule at 9:44 am EDT (6:44 am PDT) indicating […]
PowerSat – Space Solar Power
This video outlines the basics of the PowerSat space solar power satellite system. In the upper left corner of the video, a picture of Earth shows 12 hours of time, and the power received by a PowerSat receiving station, versus a similar sized solar array on the ground. What would be the life span of solar panels in space?
I know the life span of solar panels on earth is around 20 year, but to me it seems that the life span of a solar panel in space would be longer due to there being not as environmental effects.
