The world needs a new source of energy, an unspillable source.

  1. Because it is cheaper not to. (initially. In the long run, the drilling, drilling equipment, transportation, burning, etc of unclean fuels is much more expensive than putting up tons of windmills and letting the earth power humanity.

@Morphine: Do you seriously think it will be cloudy and windless everywhere on the planet? Also, more energy would be collected than used on sunny or windy days, so there would be leftovers for cloudy days.

  2. That’s just a liberal hoax trying to demote industrialism.

  3. Why don’t liberals get it about that whole socialism not working thingy?

  4. Luckily most Americans do get it that is why we will be voting for Democrats in November.

  5. If you represent the “Average college student” then our countries future is bleak.

  6. did u know regan took the solar panels off the white house that carter had installed, his first order.

honestly we could be so further ahead in america if not for greed.

  7. Great!!! Go build some solar panels and sell them; you’ll make a fortune.

  8. France gets over 90% of her energy from nuclear. Nuclear is safe and clean. I am all for new nuclear plants.
Wind power slices and dices our birds and bats, solar takes up too much space and panels are not perfected, and batteries need to be improved.
Wind and solar are not everywhere, that is why there are no countries that depend upon wind and solar
Half the day is night, and there are rainy and overcast days. Wind does not blow 24/7 in the vast majority of the world..
What you don’t understand is that we have a few more decades before alternative energy becomes dependable enough to rely upon.

  9. Oh I get it, but try doing heavy equipment work on electric There is no option. I kept my suburban for 17 years waiting for an electric but ended up buying a Volkswagen that gets 30 mpg after General motors got bailed out like pussy’s

  10. Hey, I’m with you Obama girl, but my motivation is quite different. Most of the patents for clean energy are held by American firms. Nearly 50% are held by California firms. It seems to me that enough people want it, so we should build it. It’s a win-win situation. We capitalists can make a boatload of money and you, along with the other liberals here in America, the Japanese and the Europeans can all feel good about yourselves.

  11. Really? You do know that there are areas in Central and Northern New York where such forms of energy will never be feasible? Syracuse, NY is the second cloudiest city in the USA (after Seattle, WA) and the Tug Hill Plateau buffeted from winds blowing from the west.
Besides, how would you develop those energies without oil or coal to carry your energy needs in the meantime? After all, you do like to use your computer (which needs oil to be produced and electricity to be used) don’t you?

  12. Returning to urban living has got to be a big part of the solution
High density living allows us to use traditional non petroleum forms of energy to generate the electricity that will power inter and intra city mass transit.
The resource sucking suburban lifestyle is unsustainable and therefore re- urbanization is the only solution that will actually work

  13. I don’t want the government telling what car I can drive. See, this is typical liberal appealing to my fear. Stop making the excuse that if I don’t stop driving my hummer the earth is going to be destroyed. Your are no better then Neoconservatives when they trying to make me scared when trying to pass the patriot act. It not the government’s job to invest in any kind of business. That is by definition cooperate welfare.

  14. First of all,

To produce a single wind turbine, the materials need to be mined, processed, shaped, transported, then put together. This uses more energy then that wind turbine can actually produce in its lifetime.

Solar is still very expensive, and inefficient, more research needs to be put into it to become a viable, cost effective source of energy.

And then, of course, there is base-line power, which is, enough power for everyone, all the time. You can get this with goal, gas, nuclear power stations that can run 365/24. Unfortunately with wind and solar you don’t get this.

The only reason coal, gas and oil should be eliminated, is because, maybe in 500-1000 years, we will run out of it, it will take another few thousand years to run out of uranium for nuclear power, and i’m sure by then the humans of the future would have thought of something.. Or destroyed the world trying.

I don’t know how you can say that now, in the year 2010 that nuclear power is dangerous. The French have developed a system or refining the fuel so that it can not actually reach critical mass, which was the problem at Chernobyl. As for the toxic waste? Your exposed to a higher level of radiation sitting in front of a computer all day they if you work with uranium. (The tests were done at Olympic Dam, a uranium mine in South Australia).

Why don’t Americans get it about clean energy?

Obama hit the nail on the head. Clean energy is Wind and Solar. Coal, Gas, and Oil must be eleiminated from our energy diet. Hydroelectric power destroys habitat and Nuclear is downright dangerous.

Wind and solar are everywhere so this will be no problem. Our future will be secure in cleanliness and safety.
