Gibbs Free Energy Positive In Electrolytic Cell Verses Galvanic. Quick Question?

Greetings,

I have written down in my notes that Delta G (Gibbs free energy) is Positive in an electrolytic cell, whereas it is negative in a galvanic cell. Is this mostly true in most cases? What confuses me is that there is an equation Delta G =nFE(cell) that determines the spontaneously of a reaction in a electrolytic cell. So, I was confused on what it meant by being negative and positive in a cell. Is this the standard convention?
