  1. It creates an impact on the habitats surrounding it. the area behind it will flood due to the dam there and the area below would have less water also affecting the animals.

  2. Oftentimes, hydroelectric power stations involve the construction of a dam across a flowing body of water like a large river. This can impact certain types of fish and other aquatic animals that need to swim up and downstream (for example, salmon, who annually return upstream to spawn).

    A potential impact is also that of dam failure. Although extremely rare, if a hydroelectric dam were to fail, the water behind the dam would be able to rush forth with incredible energy. This huge volume of fast-flowing water can cause extreme damage to the natural river channel, communities and other features downstream.
