You basically need an energy source. Flowing water is the energy source in your project. Water flows because of gravity and the Earth’s movement. You store the energy with a dam. You convert the energy to electricity through movement and generators. You either store it in batteries or send it to someone through wires or give it up.
Consider what land form would best hold water. It’s basically a large cup or bucket.
Most hydroelectric dams are built at the edge of a river fed reservior. That way the water flow can be regulated, and the dam never runs dry due to climate change. Uneven land won’t be an issue, as long as the dam is built properly, and rainy areas are fine as long as there is enough dry season to allow proper construction. Generally, an unpopulated area that has the correct geography, as in a river and a basin that could be used as a reservoir, are what you seek. Also, proximity to a populated area is a good idea, just to cheapen the building costs and the ease of connecting the generator to existing power lines. Good luck!
