The world needs a new source of energy, an unspillable source.

Direct Electricity from a fission power plant?

Question by Chris: Direct Electricity from a fission power plant?
Instead of using a steam turbine to generate power in a nuclear reactor. Why not ionize the fission fuel, then the fission fragments that get spit out after a fission reaction could be turned directly into electrical energy at about 80% efficiency. I’ve heard that this would be the best way to extract energy from the proton-boron 11 fusion reaction, so why not try something like this for fission.

Sounds wacky. The amount of electrical energy in the ionized fragments is minuscule compared to the energy released in the form of gamma rays and neutron recoil energy.
