  1. It is a similar question to ‘how long is a piece of string?’ Some use a Constantly Variable Transmission ( C.V.T ) whereby, depending on the engine revs various ‘V’ shaped pulleys adjust themselves. Some use a ‘standard’ auto box, & others have direct drive -1 forward & 1 reverse gear. Hope this is some help

  2. A hybrid is similar to the non-hybrid version, usually, unless there is no non-hybrid counterpart. Hybrids are not stick shifts. Electric cars don’t need a transmission, although some may use a two speed as top speeds become higher.

  3. The IC engine requires a transmission because it needs to achieve about 3000 to 5000 RPM to achieve maximum torque. It has no low end torque. The electric motor does not need a transmission as it has full torque at 0 RPM. Some electric vehicles may have a second gear to keep the motor from too many RPM but this is not usual. Electric vehicles therefore also do not need a clutch or a torque converter.

In a series hybrid the electric drive takes the place of a transmission and is sometimes called an “electric transmission.” In this configuration an IC engine will drive a generator that will in turn power the electric motor. This is the configuration used in diesel / electric locomotives and in the biggest trucks where the cost and size of a generator/electric drive is less than than the cost of the necessary transmission.1

In a parallel hybrid the IC engine will continue to drive the wheels in conjunction with the electric motor. While the direct connection between the IC engine and the wheels is more efficient, the electric motor can achieve efficiencies around 90% while the theoretical maximum for an IC engine is around 30% to petrol and 40% for diesel. Because the engine is driving the wheels it requires a traditional transmission and the gearing will be dependent upon the designed load and speed vs economy required.2

The transmission in the Toyota Prius “…acts as a continuously variable transmission (CVT) but with a fixed gear ratio.”3 So it also does not fit the traditional concept of a fixed number of gears.

How many gears does a hybrid / electric vehicle transmission have?

Depends on make and model. 90 percent of the time it will be a 5 speed.
