There are actually at least two types of hybrid vehicles. Parallel hybrids will operate two engines (motors) at the same time and both will drive the wheels. A Series hybrid will operate one engine (motor) that feeds its power into the other.

The Toyota Prius is a modern parallel hybrid that was first available in Japan in 1997. The Chev Volt is a mostly Series hybrid that becomes a parallel hybrid at the highest speeds. It has been available from the fall of 2010 in the US. Some might suggest that the Volt grew out of GM’s electromotive division that produced series hybrid diesel / electric locomotive engines from 1930 to 2005. GM sold that section of its company in 2005.

Can we expect a gas-electric hybrid car by 2012?

Question by Mac Rowling: Can we expect a gas-electric hybrid car by 2012?
I am really thrilled with this question that is constantly striking my mind. I would really love to see this kind of a car running on the roads. Do you know any automaker who can roll out such a car.
