  1. there is a right way and a wrong way when using starting fluid, this veteran was very right, nice video!

  2. i have been around equipment for 35+ years and have started 100’s of diesels and never damaged a one using ether, for all we know his restoration is just paint, you do have to be careful with oil bath air cleaners because the ether seems to accumulate and come out all at once.

  3. I quit using starting fluid long ago when I saw a guy blow the headgasket on his Detroit. I give the engine a shot of WD40 instead.

  4. I would really like to see a video of starting a old 3t d7 I started a lot of them in my day but that was before videos lol

  5. yes i would have to agree with most people on saying DONT USE EATHER/STARTING FLUID i have lost count of the number of motors i have worked with holes in the pistons or broken rods due to starting fluid

  6. Rotundrooster, Maybe you should read the label on the new cans of starting fluid they all have lubricants with the ether in it

  7. they start it fast because he is at a show and wants to look like he knows exactly what he is doing and his machine is a great insta start miracle every time. Both might be true anyway, but yeah…..thats why.

  8. love those old turbos….sounds like theres a leafblower in the exhaust…

  9. Yeah, I’d recommend laying off the ether as well.. It does help start the engine, but typically people use too much & it eats oil in the cylinders are contributes to excess wear..

  10. I love watching all these starting videos. I swear everyone is in a race to start their dozer. The pony is not only meant to start the main engine its also the diesels pre-heat since there is no glow plugs, the pony blows its exhaust past the diesel intake manifold pre-heating the intake charge of air. it also shares the diesel coolant. I dont understand why people once they start the pony send it right up to the governor. clean looking tractor though.

  11. I agree with most of you here. His starting procedure is horrible for such a nice machine.

  12. I just love those sounds, if only they made cars like they made dozers, they would last us 60 years of reliable non stop service

  13. I sure hate to see ether used so freely, and pony not let to run dry of gasoline. He must be in a really really big hurry to get the big engine started

  14. Proper shutdown on pony engine is turn fuel off and let it run out.
also, most times you don’t need starting fluid with a pony, and sure as hell don’t spray before ya spin the engine,at least that’s what I’ve heard, and it makes sense.
The paint sure is pretty though!

  15. Pony motors on smaller cats are less power, and some are rope started

  16. Pony motors have about 25 horses. Fan belts aren’t slipping. It’s an optical illusion caused by the shutter speed on the video camera nearly matching the momentary movement of the fan blades, thus making them look as if they’re moving very slowly.

Don’t forget to run the gasoline out of the pony motor or it’ll drain gasoline into your crankcase oil and dilute it!

  17. Does anyone else read replys and comments from mightycarmods in the same way moog does the voice over? lol. I cant help but not too :D

  18. anybody else get lost when they got to the wideband company? i have absolutly no clue what that was all about.

Starting old Caterpillar D8 dozer with pony motor

Camp Creek Thresher show, July 2009 Wavery, NE. A friend of ours starting his 1945 (I think), Cat D8 for the antique parade at the show. Pony motor has a broken kill switch, so he puts his hand over the intake to choke it off.
