Nuclear energy research goes on all the time, and all over the world.
Portable Nuclear Plant!
In future, we will have nuclear plants for every street or every village. In station on Moon, it may be the major power in parallel with Solar energy.
There are many areas of research in the nuclear field:
New nuclear power plant designs for centralized large power plants, new designs for smaller modular power plants, new designs for spacecraft.
Fusion research is being carried out at various Universities and Institutes around the world; Auburn, University of Rochester, MIT, UKAEA, York University too many to mention, see the links below.
Medical and Imaging Nuclear Research is also going on, thia is an expanding field of study.
Any of these could result in major advances in nuclear energy both in the short term and long term.
The Large Hadron Collider is used to do fundamental physics research, not for nuclear energy.
