Question by Chelsea Ann: Best flea and tick shampoo for a Morkie with sensitive skin?
I bought some flea and tick shampoo for him a couple weeks ago it worked and killed all the flea and stuff, but when I brushed him a bunch of flakes came out his fur. So I guess its drying out his skin so we need a new shampoo what would work best?

Over the counter flea and tick shampoos don’t really do anything but bother the animal’s skin. I would recommend not using a flea shampoo and only bathe him with a moisturizing shampoo only when he needs it. Over bathing a dog will strip all the natural oils out of their skin and coat and will cause more problems than it’s worth.
If he actually has sensitive skin, and this isn’t just a reaction to shampoo, you’d be better off putting him on a monthly chewable called Comfortis. It works great for dogs that can’t handle top spot products. If given with a meal, it has a 99% kill rate for six weeks and is tolerated very, very well by 99.99% of dogs. Since it’s a newer product, it will cost you more than the top spot products, but it works so much better and is so much easier to give. Most dogs just scarf it down with their food.
It’s not labeled for ticks, but it works on them as well. In order for the company to say it killed ticks, they would have had to massive research for each species of tick they wanted on the label. It kills and prevents fleas, ticks, mites and lice and will help repel mosquitoes. You can also get it in a product called Trifexis that also has a heart worm preventative. So you get the benefits of Comfortis killing adult fleas, lice and mites while the heart worm prevention prevents heart worms and many common intestinal worms.
It’s an excellent product, and well worth the cost.
