When you place hydrogen and oxygen near each other only separated by a special filter the protons will pass through but the electrons will be routed through cables causing electricity.
So anything that uses electricity could theoreticaly be powered by hydrogen.
fuel cells is the best example of hydrogen as an alternate source of energy. Its safe and the only by-product formed is water!
Hydrogen is also used to fuel rockets, but its not safe to use in commercial vehicles.
