The Irish Government has announced grants of up to €5000 for battery powered electric vehicles and €2500 for hybrids. As well as this, 3500 charge points will be available nationwide and Ireland is one of the first countries internationally to deploy such infrastructure on a national basis. Today, Renault Nissan unveiled their electric vehicles which will be available to customers in Ireland next year. Minister Ryan, speaking at the launch, said this is a real example of Government policy working on the ground – we are supplying the cash, cars and charge points to make the electric vehicle the smart choice for Irish consumers

I think the minister is right. Ireland is uniquely positioned as a small, independent nation to lead in green initiatives. I actually believe we could move faster. I and many others would buy an electric car tomorrow if the infrastructure and choice in models were there.
