what does it mean that the ions go against a gradient ? the anions are still going towrds the anode and the cations still towards the cathnode. and why do we need an external battery i know the reaction is not spontaneous but why? is it because of the gradient? but what causes the gradient to exist?
aaahhhhhhhh.

hmm… think of a gradient as an incline in a flat surface.. for objects on that surface, there exists a gradient represented by their tendency to passively roll down the surface. gravitational potential energy is converted to kinetic energy if they are assembled together properly.
what causes the gradient in a voltaic cell to exist? it is a natural property of the system of reactants in a cell.. they all possess chemical potential energy and it is converted to electric energy.
when the ions are going against the gradient, it means that we are providing them with energy in order for them to go against the natural tendency of the system.. if you could give me the particular make up of the electrolytic cell you’re looking at, i can explain better
