In Hybrid cars, does the AC run while the car is using electric motor?

MPG on my Camary Hybrid went down significantly. It was hovering around 38 MPG but now I only get 30 MPG. Please help.
Mine is the 2007 Camary Hybrid. It has 12K miles on it and I noticed this over the past three tanks. I thought it was because I turned on AC 3 weeks ago. Maybe I outa get batteries checked with the dealer.
