The “Sustainable Energy Europe” campaign sets out new objectives for geothermal energy production to be reached between 2005 and 2008, ie 250000 new heat pumps, 15 new electric power plants and 10 new low energy power plants. Italy was the first country in the world to use geothermal energy, with its first generation plant installed in Larderello, Southern Tuscany in 1911. Larderello’s geothermal plants today produce 10 % of the world’s supply of geothermal energy, while powering a million Italian households.
