The world needs a new source of energy, an unspillable source.

  1. @DMR40 can’t lift its own power supply? hmm… you know what that calls for? MORE SCIENCE! :D

  2. ION Wind does not account for the force needed to lift this. The wind is merely a byproduct. If you encapsulated the top electrode, and hindered the wind, it would still lift. ALSO, you could detach the lower electrode from the assembly and simply “PULL” it upwards towards the smaller electrode, like a magnet… BUT ITS NOT AN ELECTROMAGNET, its a High Voltage asymmetrical Capacitor.

  3. This is an ionocraft. Requires some conductive wire, aluminum foil or conductive mesh, bolsa frame and a HV powersupply. It’s neat and a good basis for furthur science, but impractical because if cannot lift its own power supply.

Still a great experiement, if you know what youre doing.

  4. He’s replicating a decades old experiment. I saw an old clip before on t.v.

  5. Is it just me, or does some guy in the background say, “pull it” right before it raises the second time.. I call BS, even though I know ion engines exist and I’ve seen the technology in action before. I still think this “poor man’s” ion engine is BS.

  6. The electricity ionizes the air around the top wire, and so it is attracted to the negative charge on the bottom. Air is flowing down inside of the structure, and so it’s AIR that is providing a thrust, and would only work if airor similar gas is available. It’s a poor mans ION engine.

Ion Engine

Mr. Ben Biddle’s Class (haha) watches an ion engine in motion.
