Question by OK: Is anyone performing research on non-uranium nuclear energy?
Is there the potential for using some other element that doesn’t have very hazardous byproducts? Years ago I heard about research on cesium based plants, but haven’t heard anything since.

Yes, Fusion reactors using Deuterium, Thorium reactors, MOX fuel reactors to name a few. There is research going on in universities and institutions all over the world.
