yes, now run out an buy one or two
If you are to believe the auto makers and oil companies yes. Hybrids are a step in the right direction replacing fuel use with electricity. I read an article on a car that had been hybridized and it only gets 2 – 4 more MPG for the additional $4000 price (worth it?). Consider the current Toyota Prius, it goes nowhere without fuel and the fuel situation is getting ridiculous.
Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) are not currently being manufactured by any manufacturer, it’s all 2010 or later. They do do better for fuel consumption and the environment. The problem with the PHEV conversions is they typicaly go less than 10 miles on electricity, if you go above 35 MPH the gas engine kicks in anyway.
Hybrid cars will still be around after the transition to electric cars to fill in gaps in the transportation mesh. I’m referring to long distance driving, larger vehicles etc. Fuel is going to be the biggest change in transportation. Petroleum is just plain going to be expensive so you have to get the most out of every drop. Enough ethanol can’t be made fast enough and the price will go up and we still need to produce food. Hydrogen just plain won’t work due to the lack of infrastructure, it’s going to cost so much it just won’t be worth it.
Everybody acts like it is a binary situation, ALL cars have to be electric or ALL cars have run on gas etc. There is room on the road for all fuel types.
It seems as if it were only yesterday, that this was just was a visionary concept. Automobiles that would not cause so much damage to the environment. Vehicles that would not be so expensive to drive. Cars that would use alternative energy to accomplish these dreams. However, dreams do come true, and these types of cars have been on the roads for several years already. The first successful hybrid vehicle introduced to the United States became available in 2000. Since then, as the cost of driving traditional automobiles goes ever higher, the value of hybrid vehicles also goes higher, while the purchase price lowers considerably……………….read more
