Because he was victim of a edison smear campaign fueled by jealousy and the taking advantage of an immigrant.
People who write their plans on paper the size of postage stamps and talk to pigeons tend to be written off. People who try for wireless electricity and burn out power stations are treated with animosity by the people that are blacked out. (Have to remember– the grid was not so interconnected back then. People had to wait for their station to be repaired) The biggest thing to consider was that he was up against GIANTS in several industries. Edison wanted DC Tesla, AC.
Marconi and Armstrong had the backing of huge companies and the big bucks for patent battles. The biggest thing was he didn’t like writting down things in the notebooks that the Patent department like to read.
Let’s not confuse Tesla’s brain with that of people like Newton, Einstein and Hawking. He didn’t invent calculus or come up with basic laws of physics. He mainly tinkered with electricity.
