Members of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission are in town this week to address concerns about the future of Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. They’ll be talking to community leaders about the plant’s licensing renewal process. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is the agency that manages license extensions. The process can take more than two years to complete. The current federal operating licenses for Diablo is set to expire in 2024 and 2025 for Units 1 and 2. Because the renewal process is lengthy, officials with PG&E say they wanted to streamline the process and that’s why the company filed for the extension by going directly to the NRC. NRC Spokesperson, Victor Dricks says, “We conduct a very thorough review to ensure that they understand the effects of plant aging on vital systems and equipment and are able to manage that and meet our regulatory requirements so that the plant can continue to operate safely.” Read more of this article here: www.ksby.com
