  1. of course it is. Look at Ted Bundy….a highly intelligent, yet very mentally disturbed person.

  2. Probably not. Once a mental, usually always a mental. Are you worried that you’ll be diagnosed with some mental disorder? :P

  3. Yes it is possible. You just have to do what you have to to manage it. Get counseling and talk to your doctors and find what works for you. No one is the same.

You wont collapse. You’ll find a way through.
    Best of luck.

  4. I tend to think that the more pressure you put on yourself to appear ok, the worse it will be for you in the long run. I’d get some help now to keep you on an even keel before you need bringing back from a nervous breakdown.

    Good luck x

  5. yes
one disorder, schizophrenia, often doesnt present it self until one is late in teens or early 20’s

  6. I know exactly what you’re going through, my major depression with manic tendencies has made my life a roller coaster ride, I’m currently in my last year of college and applying for university and progressively feel less and less able to function in society. I went from being outgoing, fun-loving, ambitious and well most importantly happy with the way things were, juggling my 10 A-levels to a complete wreck and I often fear that one day I’ll just lose it and collapse and all the hard work will have been for nothing and I’ll fall out of society – but I believe we can you know, I think we can just keep going, use our temperment to our advantage and always work harder than people who don’t have our problems – and if its dealing with people, getting to the job on time, taking too many days off etc – then just look into a job career or being your own boss that is flexible in hours and doesn’t involve meeting too many people. Though, never stop seeking treatment and finding ways to better manage ‘whatever condition you may have’.

However, I’m looking at worst case scenario and I don’t want you to do that, you may improve, get better, keep trying and one day feel on top of things and be living a happy, fulfilling life and contributing more to society than most so-called sane people…so don’t give up and just keep going, because if you stop with the thought and despair of never being able to do anything, then that’s what will happen. When it comes to close relationships, try not to get clingy so people don’t feel trapped and smothered with you, but I’m sure you’ll find someone who loves you for who you are and their support, as well as the support of your ‘now’ friends and family will not let you collapse.

  7. Unless you are suffering from psychotic delusions, its perfectly possible to be mentally ill and a functioning member of society. Delusional/paranoid thinking usually ‘gives you away’ as being mentally ill, and creeps people out as you explain why the CIA and the martians have implanted wires in your brain. Delusions also interfere with your being able to interpret and react appropriately to environment. It can also interfere with cognitive functioning and being able to process and interpret abstract concepts.
That said, there are millions of people with major depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, OCD and the like, who are fully functional and upright citizens. So the odds of you being a ‘real nut’ are low. How ever, the odds of being highly stress in college are high, so if you require medication now to cope, realise that in the crucible that is college, you may have a harder time coping, and plan accordingly.

  8. Hey, not a problem….

Just join a far left Liberal Group then:

    A. Talk about things that will get our kids killed fighting a foreign war by making the enemy think that by bad mouthing our politicians, all they have to do is kill a few more Americans and we will cut and run. So far it is working.

    B. Claim that a “three eyed furry ice toad” is endangered in a place they “May” find oil on American soil. That way we can buy oil from those that truly want to kill us and fill their bank accounts up so they can buy really neat “Bad ***” toys to kick our butts.

    C. Scream that President Bush flew planes into the twin towers and placed explosives all over the buildings to ensure they would fall down to start “Fake” wars.

Yep, you scream and claim all that really goofy type of stuff, and you can be crazier than a loon, and 50% of the American population will believe YOU are totally sane…… Not to mention you can probibley get some kind of grant to get a free college education to boot! Then you could get a really top rated TV talk show…. like Rosie’s…..

The fact that you are worried about your “Phychological being”, means that there is great hope that you are not as bad as you feel, and close to being as normal as the other 50% of us. Go talk with a Priest, Doctor or close friend may be the boost that you need.

    Good Luck

  9. Hi Sweetie,
Absolutely, many people walk to school, work, the Gym looking & talking totally stable when their mind is just a “Ball of Confusion” being it an chemical embalance, a disorder of some kind, or just mentally unstable, some a ticking time bomb! In all walk’s of life being a student, janitor, or President
of a Company! We all have problems, some more than others. I hope this this answers your question? lol

    LOL, Diana D

  10. Yes, it would depend on the person.
But , if you are in college and can think logically about all this and you consciously believe you have mental disorders…then you probably aren’t too crazy

people with EXTREME psychological disorders tend to NOT be functional members of society
unless you cound serial killers/rapists who can act very normal when they want to.

  11. Trust me just get the help. You’ll be less stressed about it. I had the same thoughts for many years. I had no idea how I was going to accomplish anything but I am now 29 have a great marriage and am finally starting a career. It took me long enough to get here but once I finally realized I was a nut case and no matter whether I was right or wrong I was just not going to fit in with the “average” person. Yes I say average because I feel those of us with these types of disorders are above average and we are just so stressed about having to deal with the rest of these idiots.!!! :) Oh and do a little research… I can think of a few but I am sure there are more… The following individuals suffered from depression to severe mental disorders: Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Virginia Woolf, Sylvia Plath, Vincent Van Gogh, Edgar Allen Poe, and Michaelangelo;.. no not the turtle

Q&A: Is it possible to have EXTREME psychological disorders but still be a functioning member of society?

Question by Barack McClinton: Is it possible to have EXTREME psychological disorders but still be a functioning member of society?
Could I be a real mentally messed up person who some how manages to pass in college?

If I eventually collapse and become a real nut, is there a way I could put it off until after college so I can at least make a living?
I fit many criteria for numerous disorders

(schizotypal, others)
Oh yes I shall refuse help until my last dying breath (stubborn)
