Supreme Court Slashes Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Fine to One-Tenth of Original Billion Ruling The Supreme Court handed corporate America a major victory this week when it sharply reduced the amount of money Exxon Mobil has to pay in punitive damages for the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska. An Alaskan jury had initially ruled Exxon should pay five billion dollars in punitive damages but in 2006, the 9th US Circuit Court cut the award of punitive damages in half. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court cut the amount of punitive damages again and ordered Exxon Mobil to pay just 0 million in punitive damages — one tenth of the original jury’s ruling.

yeah… an oil spill has nothing to do with the epa……..idiot

these comments seem so off point …perhaps I’ve been mistaken about the factual content
this is about an oil spill of at least 11 million gallons of oil
it is logical to think that the oil companies would find it worth their while to recover rather than disperse …even a man in a totally different buisness was more effective than the oil ‘experts’ at recovering the oil simply yet effectively
good gracious! ..the oil was a meter thick in places to deploy booms was and still is ludicrous
hummm, GHWB didn’t visit Valdez?
5:10, check out the scary vein on the side of ‘Steve’ ‘s head throb when he finds out some scruffy fishermen, led by David Morse (for a moment, I thought it was a young Russell Crowe, but he wasn’t beating anybody up, so it couldn’t be him) want to sit in on their fancy meeting.
2:37- Just what any oil disaster pic needs: a car chase! With scaaaary violin sounds!!
Boy, I love watching this coast guard admiral act like he’s General effing blood&guyts McArthur!
Rip Torn: Sonny, when i was knee-high to a grasshopper, we’d walk ten miles, barefoot, in the SNOW, to clean up our oil spills, and we’d use nothing but a spoon and the sweat off our brow!
Other guy: excuse me sir, but your full of crap.
Rip Torn: I’m just saying, don’t blow this out of proportion. (= awesome)
ooh and the ceo of exxon (I assume, the baldie) is the weird general from Twin Peaks! This movie is full of obscure yet great bit part actors. And here’s Rip Torn as Admiral Yost, with hair died white, being grizzled and ornery & totally nuts; As usual. He shoulda won an oscar for Freddie Got Fingered. Just saying.
In cases like that the supreme court should be under 24 hour a day surveilance.
i didnt buy any calls, looks like the market is going to be shit for a while
You’re a dick
Sweet!!! This is good news for me!! I’m busy buying up XOM (Exxon Mobil) stock option calls at around the 72.50 and 75.00 strikes for January 2012!! I hope they make more money and their stock goes up so I can make a few hundred thousand dollars. :) I love capitalism!!!
Check out OIL SPILL ELIMINATOR on youtube please. It is cool.
The biggest assholes of the world. Talk about terroisim why isnt homeland security on this? Oh right their salaries are paid by exxon mobil
What this ruling has ensured for the future, is that people will not even sue big companies like Exxon Mobil at all because no lawyer would even take a case like this without millions of dollars up front to finance 19 years of litigation.
It is time for Americans to wake up and get involved with the rulemaking of our great country. This is just another example of the sheeping of America. Just bleat baa-aah baa-aah at the gas pump as you pay $4.50 a gallon, sure to go up much higher real soon. They(Exxon, big oil) are rich and powerful beyond our wildest dreams.
Its not run by oil, but central banks. Look for the “money makers” on youtube.
Central banks run everything. Just watch them buy up the insolvent loans and go to the Federal Reserve as a lend of last resort to bail them out. Buy a failing loan on the cheap an then get the Treasury to print money to cover the failed loan.
During the great depression, exec feared for their lives.
also, … “Global warming” is only a RECENT term. Can anybody say how the “ozone layer” is doing? (that’s an 80’s thing– i mean science.)
soooo….. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!
V for Vendetta
This government, in all three branches, is so in the pocket of corporations. What an absolute shithole our country has become.
I HATE EXXON MOBIL. I hate you exxon.
this is not a country run by the people anymore. the usa is run as an oil corporation now. BY THE OIL CORPS, FOR THE OIL CORPS this totally proves it. quite a slap in the face to the people, animals and environment of the usa and the PLANET.
exxon could certainly afford to pay the people but NO. they rule the usa now. thats a fact. OIL OIL OIL OIL
nothing is more important to the politicians now. bought and sold.
