  1. Neutrons always react with the nucleus of an atom it is just a question of how far they have to travel to find an atom to react with.

  2. They are either absorbed by the control rods, impact another radioactive molecule and continue the reaction, absorbed by the reactor casing, or absorbed by the coolant. Remove the coolant or control rods and you would be looking at a runaway reaction (another Chernobyl)

what could possibly happen to neutrons produced in a fission reactor?
