I have been fighting with my spark gap and what to use for a while and i was thinking about it why not ask the inventor what he used? Wel as yo can see my problem I can’t really ask him so if anyone has any websites or books that explain this id appreciate the help.

Many of his patent designs are now online through various scientific resources. If you do a Google or Yahoo search for his patents, you will probably be able to search through his original drawings and find some clues on what he used. There are many, for instance here is an example:
