I don’t think we’re working on anything yet, but mostly focused on getting to the moon and establishing the base there.
The one I like the most is a giant solar sail…
well ion drive is not possible as the impulse is so low you wouldnt gain a fast enough speed in the short distance to mars, so it would take a while.
nuclear bomb launching may work as this would create a large amount of thrust and take up little room as fuel.
chemical could also work but would be slower than nuclear, and the fuel would take up more room, leaving less for transport.
My guess is that we won’t go to Mars until after a Moon base is established, and then the craft for going to Mars will be assembled on and launched from the Moon. It will likely be a chemical fuel rocket, which will take far less fuel to get to Mars from the Moon since most the energy in Earth launched craft is needed to get out of the atmosphere. So, we’ll launch from the Moon, and loop around the sun using gravity to speed up.
I suspect that the propulsion will be conventional. If it is assembled and launched on the Moon or from earth orbit, then we will avoid having to lose a lot of fuel just climbing out of the earth’s gravity well. A large rocket launched from the Lunar surface would work nicely.
I think a fast way there would be using nuclear power, like the other person said. It gives you the biggest bang for you buck, and more power and less room. I was watching something on TV, and it was saying nuclear power would take a normally 4 day trip to the moon and cut it to just under 24 hours. Now I don’t know the math for going to Mars but it would make it faster. Just have to deal with is it safe to put nuclear power in space, but they have done it on the the voyager spacecrafts and there are nuclear power submarines. I don’t know just my thoughts.
