The world needs a new source of energy, an unspillable source.

  1. I know of at least the computer, washer, and dryer as being super electricity suckers.

  2. The air conditioner uses the most. After that the television uses a lot of electricity.

  3. Electric Stoves and electric hot water heaters are #1 then tv’s, Toaster ovens, microwave ovens standard toasters respectively. On your hot water heater even if it is gas they have insulating blankets that wrap the heater this will save you money. Other than that good common sense on what appliance to use and when to use them. I feel ya on the cost thing your not alone. Good luck.

  4. When something uses electricity it produces heat. The more heat, the more power consumption. Space heaters, clothes driers, coffee pots, electric water heaters, etc.. use a good bit of power. A timer on the water heater will save some money. many of the electric companies have programs where they install timers and charge different rates for power usage during off-peak hours, give them a call. The new light bulbs (fluorescent) will save a few bucks a month but other than that, you will have to go around the house and figure out what you have that could be turned off.

  5. Number one is the Air Conditioner.

Other machines you can measure. You can buy a meter for around $10 which will tell you how much energy an appliance uses.

The usual suspects are: ANYTHING that uses electricity to heat something. So that’s the water cooker, the oven, dish- and clotheswasher and the electric iron.

Electric heaters are such electricity burners that you shouldn’t even have them.
Same goes for clothesdryers: Stop using them. It makes a lot of difference.

The other cathegory are things that don’t burn energy but are on for long times: TV, lights, computer.

Energy saving bulbs in the fixtures you use the most. TV, radio and amplifier OFF, not on standby.
Measuring the amount of water you want to boil saves a heap of electricity; much cheaper than heating a gallon for one cup of tea.

  6. If you use the A/C (or Electric Heater in Connecticut) all day, that is something that WILL skyrocket your electricity bill. Check the URL below for a nice estimate of appliance power usage.

Apart from that, the real culprits are the LIGHT BULBS!!! did you ever check the wattage on them? I bet you have a few 100w, 60w, and maybe even 120w or more!! turn them all on together and you are using up to 1000w!!!! That’s the real stinger…

Try to lower your A/C or Heater usage if you can, but, MOST IMPORTANTLY, change your bulbs to CFL’s. They are more expensive initially, but if you can afford them, they pay for themselves and more in 5 years.

I replaced all of my commonly used lights, mostly ceiling reflectors and others that require 100-120watts. In fact, if you have more than 10-12 commonly used bubs (ceiling reflectors, fan lights, etc. have multiple bulbs), then you start seeing immediate results!!

  7. same problem here! i started at the braker and turned off all and found out the fridge and washing/dryer using most!
they are not energy star efficant! we pay up the ying yang for them running! but what can u do?

  8. The AC is the worst, and according to a publication that my electric company sent, next would be the fridge….. especially if it’s an older model.

Which household appliances and electronics use the most electricity?

I live in the New Haven area of Connecticut and our electric bills have absolutely skyrocketed in the past year. What are some good ways to conserve electricity on a daily basis? Which household electronics and appliances use the most electricity?
Which will cost more on the electric bill-
Using space heaters or leaving the heat on?
