The world needs a new source of energy, an unspillable source.

  1. you can’t just create geothermal energy. if there is no activity in the region it isn’t doable. it works great in iceland though.

  2. it should be viable in east Africa’s rift valley , possibly Zaire & a few other places.
geothermal could be used just about anywhere if we could find a cost effective way to drill deep enough.
its currently only being used in places like Iceland & California where the crust is thin & magma is near the surface.
I’m surprised more attention isn’t being paid to geothermal since most of our fossil fuel is currently being burned just to heat water & generate electricity.
if we do start using more geothermal you can be sure the luddites & ecofreaks will start a propaganda campaign to stop it.

  3. yes! they are already surveying around the great rift valley in several countries. the continent is splitting apart there so its a prime site.

depite the ‘luddite’ crack, i have to thumbs up crash, goethermal is not getting the attention it deserves, the technology is mature, it can be done anywhere if you drill deep enough, all it needs is upfront investment…….ah, there’s the problem, most gov.s and companies are looking for quick returns.

  4. OK, there are two geothermal energy saving systems. The most common on in use is where you use the warm earth (or cool) that is about 5 to 20 feet down. The temperature is about 55 degrees all year round, just like caves. You can install a heat pump (which is a freon air conditioner that either makes heat or cold. By doing this, you can cut your electric bill on heat or AC by 20%.

The other geothermal is trying to find hot geo active areas, like volcano’s or hot springs. These are rare and the cost to use them is enormous,

Would geothermal be an efficient source of energy in Africa?

Not to sound ignorant, but would geothermal energy be a beautiful way to help modernize an undeveloped continent?
