  4. it is not easy for over 70% of the viewers and commenters to see the lower side of the ruler is having a small bit of pressure put onto it, pushing the mechanism forward, visually he is also moving the ruler whilst carrying the pushing process, out.

  15. Everything here is real folks. It’s just a result of some nice physics. For those confused, notice how the big wheel is touching the smaller wheels. It’s not actually touching the outside rim of the small wheels is it? It’s touching the “insides” of the wheels if you get my drift.

  17. Look at his other video, “Under the Ruler 3: Tilting the Ruler.” He shows in the video that tilting the ruler does not determine which way the cart will move.

  18. This is baloney. He’s pushing down on the wheel with the ruler at an angle causing the wheel to move away from the pressure. The direction he moves the ruler is irrelevant. If he were to keep the ruler level and gently move it along the wheel, then the result would be the same as using your finger.

  32. I have to say I agree with you. I used to love Al Green as a kid and every live performance he did the same thing; kept changing the pitch, cadence, everything.. people pay to see you sing like the record. I mean a little improvisation is cool but don’t change everything up

  36. Am I the only one who thinks he was awful? I mean, I love this song, but it was almost like he was singing poorly on purpose. It seems like he was trying to make it interesting by altering the timing and singing differently (like in a lot of live performances), but I think it just came out horribly. He was always like a half-second off and it sounded like he was uncomfortable at the pitches he picked. I’m not hating, I just wasn’t impressed.

Under the ruler faster than the ruler

Another model demonstrating the principle of the cart that moves down wind faster than the wind. Inspired by some ideas posted on the discussion at forums.randi.org, I made a simple cart that is propelled underneath a moving surface, faster than that surface. The large wheel, turning against the direction of movement of the ruler, is very similar to the propeller of the wind-powered cart, turning against the wind.
