Question by JON B: Denying gopher access to sod — hillside homesite?
My home is built on a hillside, and our sod extends to the edge of the top of the hill. Although I trap and kill gopher after gopher, the invasion continues — and given that the hillside is wildland it probably always will.
Does anyone have ideas for landscaping or methods to keep the gophers at bay? Would a retaining wall built down into the hillside to a certain depth discourage the incursions? I’ve tried repellants, noisemakers, and spraying the property with natural oils that are supposed to “sour” the grubs and vegetation that gophers eat to repel them and cause them to move on, but nothing’s worked so far. Now I’m thinking in terms of denying them access physically — say with a concrete retaining wall built down into the hillside. Anyone have answers for me? Thanks!
