  1. Because most of the time there is no pre-existing lake to make one. this requires a river to be dammed which causing all sorts of problems down stream due to reduced water flow. It also affects the water table in the surrounding landscape which can have a detrimental effect on the local environment.

    Even if there is a pre-existing lake. The down stream flow is modified which causes all sort of problems for animals living in the river, and for people who rely on that river e.g. farmers.

why are hydroelectric lakes considered bad for the environment?
