  1. Electrolysis requires a cathode and an anode to work properly. Alternating current would exchange the cathode and anode about sixty times a second and as a result no electrolysis would occur. However, the electrolyte might get plenty warm.

Why must the external electrical supply for an electrolytic cell be a direct current?

Instead of alternating current?
